WE ARE VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT TRAINING.
All of our consultants, designers and trainers have experienced what it is like to do a job in a newsroom – on deadline – that no one really prepared you to do. This isn’t about theory. We hear from newspaper staffers around the world about how frustrated and afraid they are because they simply aren’t sure what they are supposed to do.
And a recent ASNE survey asked journalists at newspapers whether they wanted more money or more training. They picked TRAINING!
Our principal, Bill Ostendorf, had first-hand experience with this problem. With two degrees in writing and reporting and no design training, his first summer job was as a photographer. And soon afterward, the editor asked if he could design some pages because an editor had left. It wasn’t pretty.
STILL, TOO MANY PAPERS CUT TRAINING first when things go bad and seem to reinstate it last when things are good. With the constant cutbacks, technology changes and new product demands in our newsrooms and advertising departments, training should be one of our top priorities. Training is one of the few things we can turn to when we’re told to do more with less.
If you do nothing else for your staff or publication, get your people more training. It pays off in spades – better morale, longer retention, better communication, better content, more efficiency and a full return on the software, cameras and computers you DID spend so much money on.
HOW GOOD IS OUR TRAINING?
We feel we do the best training in the industry. Bill started Creative Circle in the 1980s primarily to do training at newspapers. He has led nearly 400 workshops on three continents.
